Larchmont & Mamaroneck

History of 3 communities blends into 1 town

The Village of Larchmont and Mamaroneck are within the boundaries of Mamaroneck town, each hug the scenic shores of Long Island and each are linked by the historic Boston Post Road. Yet despite the geographical proximity, the three communities have different cultures, lifestyles and histories.

Larchmont, Just over one square mile in size, is a wealthy enclave of approximately 6,500 people. Its residents are well-to-do business and professional employees who live in water front estates and large homes with manicured lawns. The villages downtown houses, antique stores, boutiques, restaurants, gourmet food stores and bakeries.

Its neighbor, Mamaroneck village, is more divers. The 2.33 square-mile community people is home to a mix of residents who range from the upper class in the villages Orienta section to the blue collar workers.

The 5.17 square-mile town of Mamaroneck is the unincorporated section that is part of neither village. It is governed by an elected supervisor and Town Board. Like Larchmont, it has large single-family homes along windy tree-lined streets.

While each of the three communities were originally land purchased from Indians in the early 18th centuries, they developed in different ways after settlement.

Larchmont began as a Quaker farming town but soon evolved into a popular vacation spot for wealthy New Yorkers attracted by the areas theatrical performances, balls and games. By the late 1800s many began to settle in Larchmont, which has been home to actor Michael OKeefe, playwright Edward Albee and writers Jean and Walter Kerr past owners of the home made famous by Jean Kerrs novel, Please Dont Eat The Daisies.

Neighboring Mamaroneck village developed as a working mans town as  Mamaroneck Harbor became an important commercial center for the area. Manufacturing in the 19th century attracted immigrants from Italy, Ireland and Germany, making Mamaroneck a vibrant, mixed community.

Like much of Westchester, the town of Mamaroneck began as a farming community and later developed in to a suburban commuter town.

Today, Mamaroneck town and village offer a variety of cultural and social events. The Emelin Theater for the Performing Art Center offers more than 200 plays, ballet and jazz performances, and childrens programs every year.

Several miles of waterfront in the three municipalities lure residents to beautiful beaches and shores dotted with yachting clubs.

The Style of life in the community is a blend of the unique environment of seashore and delightful woods along with a social life ranging from international sophistication to a quaint New England charm. It speaks of a local history starting in 1661 when the three necks of land were purchased from the Siwanoy Indians by a rich Boston merchant. Here you will find comfortable homes both large and small, and distinctive estates nestled amid tree-lined streets, a picturesque shoreline with deep harbors, and coves on the Long Island Sound.
